Happy Monday everyone, get those shovels ready, keep that snow salt available because old man winter is coming to western pa. in a big way this week! Oh yea, it is coming and lets keep our car fenders to ourselves this week. Some Monday Morning Wisdom for driving this winter season.
These tips are just reminders but hey if you learn something new good. Also add some comments below if you have some.
Tips for driving in the winter
Check all your fluids, coolant, window washer and check your window wipers for condition. Carry some rock salt to help with ice buildup under your tires should you get stuck. Don't forget to pack your ice scrapers and brushes and carry an extra set of gloves that you clean the car with your other gloves can keep you warm in the car and on the streets.
Always clean off your windows, and if you have remote start use it to soften up the ice and scrape off the snow as well. Clean your snow of your car, in PA its a ticket if snow is flying off your car into traffic. You have been warned.
Drive with caution and drive a little slower. A comment on this one if your driving slow stay in the right lane, not the fast lane. Also if your driving extremely slow put on your flashers so people can be alerted to your driving.
Make sure your tires have been checked for tire pressure and tread wear. Replace if needed. Know your state and local tire chain or studded tire laws.
If you start to skid to the right steer into the skid to regain control and tap the brakes gently. If you do not have ABS (Anti Lock Brakes) then pump your brakes as pushing down hard on them could lock them up causing a skid.
When approaching a steep hill leave plenty of room between you and the car in front. Let me repeat this, leave plenty of room between you and the car in front, drive slowly keep the car moving and if the car in front gets stuck, you will just as well if you are riding his bumper to closely. So keep a good distance on all roads this winter.
The web site Onthesnow.com stated that when your driving 55 mph your car travels 81 feet per second and you should have one car length for every 10 mph of speed in normal conditions, yes normal conditions. Two to three car lengths for every 10 mph in winter driving mode. So if your driving 30 mph you should have 6 to 9 car lengths between you and the car in front. Not riding his bumper. Lets use our noggin out there.
Practice, practice, practice in a mall parking lot with no cars. Try to understand how your car reacts on snow and ice in an empty parking lot. Try turning, stopping, pumping your brakes in a place where you won't hit anyone or anything. You will be surprised what you learn about your reaction time and your car.
So thats it for today, yes I want some of your tips this winter driving season. Stay safe and drive smarter.
Just some Monday morning smiles sent your way! : )
